The Hidden Ibiza: Stories Behind Our Swim Trunk Prints
- by Syd & Rex
Every Syd & Rex print starts with a story. Not a mood board, not a trend report, not a Pinterest scroll at 2am. A real story, from a real place - usually told over a cold beer at a chiringuito somewhere around sunset.
That's the thing about Ibiza. Scratch beneath the surface of the superclubs and the sunset selfies, and you'll find an island with layers. Ancient salt flats where flamingos wade at dawn. Dirt tracks that lead to beaches with no name and no signal. Podenco hounds trotting through the campo like they own the place - which, frankly, they do.
We've spent over two decades on this island. Long enough to know the stories that don't make the guidebooks. And we've woven them into every print we make. Here's what they mean.
If you've driven the back roads of Ibiza - the real ones, past the fincas with the crumbling stone walls and the orange groves - you've seen them. The Podenco Ibicenco. Lean, leggy, ears like satellite dishes. They've been on this island for thousands of years, brought by the Phoenicians, and they still move through the landscape like they wrote the rules.
The Party Dogs print is our tribute to these characters. Playful, original, and unmistakably Ibizan. You won't find this print anywhere else, because you won't find these dogs anywhere else. They're not pets in the conventional sense - they're campo dogs, hunting dogs, free spirits. A bit like the island itself.

Most people know Es Cavallet as a beach. A good one, too - long, sandy, with a couple of decent restaurants and a crowd that skews towards people who actually live here. But walk past the last chiringuito, past the dunes, and you'll reach the salt flats of Ses Salines.
This is where the flamingos come. Not in the hundreds-of-thousands, David Attenborough way. In the quiet, early-morning, you-have-to-know-where-to-look way. Pink against white salt, still water reflecting the sky. It's one of those Ibiza moments that reminds you the island was here long before the first DJ booth.
The Birds of a Feather print captures that stillness. Delicate, unexpected, and a reminder that the best things on this island aren't found in the VIP section.

Pull up a nautical chart of the Pitiusas - that's the old name for Ibiza and Formentera together - and you'll see something beautiful. Contour lines tracing the coastline. Depth markings in the channels between the islands. The shape of Cala Conta, Cala Salada, Cala d'Hort, rendered in the precise, unsentimental language of cartography.
Island Lines takes those contours and turns them into something you can wear. It's a print for people who know these islands by water, not just by road. Who've sailed the channel to Formentera, anchored in the shadow of Es Vedrà, or simply traced the coastline on a map and thought: I need to go there.
Island Camo takes the same geographical DNA and reimagines it as camouflage - because the best way to blend in on this island is to know it intimately. The topography becomes the pattern. The island becomes the uniform.

The Brotherhood isn't a club. There's no membership fee, no velvet rope, no secret handshake. It's simpler than that. It's the group of mates who show up. The ones who'll drive the boat, carry the cooler, remember the sunscreen, and still be there when the sun comes up.
Our Brotherhood icon - two figures, side by side - represents that. Father and son. Brothers. Mates. The people you make memories with. Brotherhood Camo takes that icon and scatters it across a camouflage pattern, because real brotherhood doesn't announce itself. Brotherhood Scribble renders it in a looser, hand-drawn style - like a sketch on a napkin at a beach bar. Spontaneous. Unpolished. Real.

Ibiza's coastline isn't all soft sand and gentle waves. Head north, past Portinatx, or west towards Cap Blanc, and the island shows its bones. Limestone cliffs, sea caves, rock formations sculpted by centuries of salt and wind. It's dramatic, raw, and completely indifferent to whatever's happening in Ibiza Town.
Solid Rock is our plain fabric palette, no print - bold, confident, grounded. It's for the days when you want something that feels as permanent as the island's geology. No gimmicks, no trends. Just solid.

There's a particular quality to things that are made by hand on this island. The ceramic plates at the market in Sant Jordi. The hand-painted signs outside the campo restaurants. The way someone draws you a map on the back of a receipt because Google Maps doesn't know about the beach you're looking for.
Island Scribble captures that energy. It's loose, imperfect, human. A print that looks like it was sketched during a long lunch in San Rafael, which - if we're being honest - isn't far from the truth.

Some things are better said than shown. The Words print is a typographic piece - a collection of the phrases, mantras, and in-jokes that define life on this island. "In, On & By the Water." "Sunrise to Sunset." "The Brotherhood of the Balearic Beat." They're the things you'd overhear at Pikes, scrawled on a wall in Dalt Vila, or muttered by someone watching the sunset from Café Mambo for the thousandth time and still meaning it.
It's our most personal print. Not everyone will get every reference. But the ones who do will know exactly what it means.
If you're heading to Ibiza and want to see the places that inspired these prints, here's where to start. These aren't tourist recommendations — they're the places we actually go.
For the Podencos: Drive the road from Santa Gertrudis to Sant Mateu d'Albarca. Early morning, windows down. You'll see them.
For the flamingos: Ses Salines Natural Park, south of the island. Go at sunrise, before the beach crowd arrives. Bring binoculars.
For the coastline: The cliff walk from Cala d'Hort to Es Vedrà viewpoint. Best at golden hour, when the rock turns amber.
For the maps: Rent a boat from San Antonio and sail south to Formentera. No itinerary. Just the chart and the wind.
For the Brotherhood: Anywhere there's a table, a view, and good company. We'd suggest the terrace at Can Pilot in Sant Rafael. Order the lamb.
Every print tells a story. Every story starts on this island. And every pair of Syd & Rex swim trunks is an invitation to discover them for yourself.
Designed in Ibiza. Seen around the world. Made from the ocean, for the ocean.
